Equiano’s religious journey began at about the age of 12, an innocent slave child questioning a foreign phenomenon that was to become known as snow. When questioning the function and origin of the snow he was answered by his captain who explained this cold white substance came from “a great man in the heavens, called God.
Equiano’s travels brought him to Turkey, Martinico, Georgia, Montserrat, Grenada, France, and even to the North Pole. That mission sought a route to India, but was a failure. Throughout these voyages, Equiano proved himself to be immensely capable and intelligent. He had learned how to read and write, and mastered navigation.
Olaudah Equiano was born in 1745 in Eboe, in what is now Nigeria. When he was about eleven, Equiano was kidnapped and sold to slave traders headed to the West Indies. Though he spent a brief period in the state of Virginia, much of Equiano's time in slavery was spent serving the captains of slave ships and British navy vessels.
Equiano begins his Narrative by acknowledging how memoir writers often must defend themselves against claims of vanity. Further, people expect memoirs to have dramatic events and great personages if they are to be interesting.
The young slave served several English and American masters who gave him Western names, including GustavusVassa, the name he used most often and included in the title of his book: Equiano’s Travels: The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano or GustavusVassa the African.
