Much Ado About Nothing features one of Shakespeare’s most admired and well-loved heroines, Beatrice. Her strength of spirit, sense of independence, and fierce wit place her among the most powerful female characters Shakespeare ever created. But her self-sufficiency does not prevent her from accepting love. Although both she and Benedick have vowed that they will never marry, they change.

In the seminar about Much Ado About Nothing we worked with one of William Shakespeare’s comedies. It is a play that greatly combines different elements such as hilarity, melancholy, love and marriage.
Beatrice and Benedick have some of the wittiest dialogue in this romantic comedy. Here, Beatrice starts this round of insults by asking Benedick why he continues to speak if no one is listening to him. She knows how much he loves the attention he gets from others, and so this insult is meant to deflate his ego. His response includes the first of many playful nicknames that Benedick continues.
Beatrice is willing to give up love over Hero’s reputation, and Benedick is willing to give up his friendship with Claudio over Beatrice’s love. Once he’s been moved by love, his loyalties are clear to him and he doesn’t exhibit any of the misgivings that make Beatrice’s love so tentative. This is shored up in the final scene, when he’s the one that puts their love to the public.
